Driveways in Bransholme, Hull

Bransholme is the large north-eastern estate inside Hull. Drives here are usually on-plot parking for houses that were built with a mix of gardens, garages and shared courts.

In short

Hull City Council's conservation-area list does not name Bransholme. City crossing rules still apply. The photographs show shops on Wawne Road and Gatwick House, not a paved drive.

The estate layout, the highway process, and the east-of-city drains are below.

What the two pictures are

Ian S's first photograph is the row of shops on Wawne Road. It is a local centre, not a house frontage. It is here so the estate is recognisable: a purpose-built neighbourhood with its own shops, not a village high street. Do not send this frame to a contractor as the address to be paved.

The second photograph is Gatwick House. The name is on the picture's title. It reads as a larger block rather than a semi with a garden. Flats and houses on Bransholme do not share one parking problem. A flat with a marked bay in a court is a different job from a house with a lawn to the footway. If you are in a block, say whether the bay is demised to the flat, shared, or still adopted highway. A paving firm that digs up a communal court without the landlord's say-so is in the wrong conversation. This website cannot tell you which of those tenures Gatwick House uses. The photograph does not say.

This page also does not date the estate. Published council pages used here do not give a construction decade, so none is stated.

Not a conservation area, still a city street

The numbered conservation-area list runs through places such as Sutton Village, Garden Village and the Avenues. Bransholme is not among the names. There is no Bransholme Article 4 direction to quote. That removes one layer. It leaves the ordinary rules.

Hull City Council requires approval before a vehicle crossing is built, and it limits the highway work to contractors it has approved. Building a crossing without approval is described on the council's page as an offence. The June 2025 pack adds planning permission where the road is classified, and in the Avenues/Hymers area. Bransholme is not the Avenues. Whether a particular spine road is classified is a question for that pack and the council, not a label this site will stick on Wawne Road from a photograph of shops.

Many estate houses already have a dropped crossing to a garage or a hard standing. Replacing the surface inside the boundary is then a private job, until you widen the opening or move it. Widening is a new highway question. Say "existing crossing, surface only" or "new opening" in the first line of the request so the two are not priced as one.

Front gardens over five square metres still sit under the Planning Portal's rule when the surface is impermeable and water runs to the road. The planning guide walks through that test. Estate grass verges that belong to the council are not yours to tarmac so a second car can sit sideways. If the verge is highway, the crossing process is the only lawful way across it.

Parking courts and garages

A lot of Bransholme's parking was designed as courts behind houses, or as integral garages that later became storage. People then want a space at the front because the court feels unsafe or the garage is full. The front garden may be shallow. A car that overhangs the footway is not a completed drive, whatever the brochure photo on some other website implies. Measure from the house wall to the back of the footway before asking for two spaces.

Garages that are too narrow for a modern car are common on estates of this kind. This page will not claim a width for a Bransholme garage. If yours will not take the car, the quote is for a standing outside it, and the garage door, the drain in front of it, and the slope to the footway all belong in the description.

Block paving is often chosen because a court or a tapering front is an awkward shape for a single asphalt sheet, and because a utility cover can be reinstated in blocks. Asphalt suits a simple rectangle and matches the material the council usually wants on the public crossing. Resin needs the base to be sound. Gravel migrates onto footways and into courts where it punctures tyres and blocks gullies. The surface guides compare those behaviours without a price, because this site does not publish prices.

Water on the north-east side of Hull

The city's local flood risk strategy describes Hull as mainly urban and predominantly built on reclaimed marshland. Bransholme is part of that city, not the higher ground the same document places at Cottingham, Willerby and Kirk Ella, west of the boundary. The drainage appendix names Sutton Cross Drain and Old Fleet Drain as main rivers in the east, and the Holderness Drain discharging to the Humber. A driveway does not manage those rivers. It should not add a new sheet of water to the footway if a border or a permeable section can hold it on the plot.

Open the BGS Geology Viewer on the close itself. Superficial deposits across Hull include alluvium and glacial material, and they are not uniform. Soft ground under a thin existing drive is a reason a "overlay only" quote can fail. Ask the professional what they will do if the formation is soft. If the answer is a shrug, the quote is not finished.

How to brief it

Use the street name, not just "Bransholme". Say house or flat. Say whether a crossing, a garage and a court already exist. Mention any tree in the verge. Sutton-on-Hull is the older village to the east. Kingswood is the later neighbourhood to the north, with its own page, including a warning that some edges may fall outside the city. Garden Village has a hard-surface Article 4 that does not apply on this estate.

Questions about Bransholme

Do conservation-area rules apply because east Hull has several?

Only if the council map puts your house inside one. Bransholme as a name is not on the list this site used. Sutton Village and Garden Village are different places with their own pages.

Can you tell me when the estate was built?

No. A decade is not given in the council documents linked here, so this page does not invent one.

Who prices the work?

Local professionals may contact you if you send the form. This website is not one of them and does not install the drive.
