What changes a driveway quote in Hull

A useful comparison is two quotes that describe the same dig, the same surface and the same treatment of the footway. A single number with none of that detail is not comparable.

In short

This website does not publish a price per square metre, a typical bill, or a range. Hull's ground, the crossing and the planning rules move the job too much for a stock figure to be honest.

Below: the lines that should appear on a quote, and the lines that often get left off.

Why there is no price list here

National "average cost" articles pick a metre rate and multiply by a rectangle. They cannot see whether your garden is clay, whether a tree root crosses it, whether the footway is a verge, or whether the street is in a conservation area that needs a planning application before anyone digs. Publishing those averages on a Hull domain would look like a local price. It would not be one. Hull Driveways does not lay drives and does not collect the money, so it also has no completed invoices to average.

Asking for quotes is free. The figure a professional later offers is their figure. You do not have to accept it.

The lines that change the job

Area and shape. A rectangle on paper is rarely the garden. Tapers, a path to the door, and a step at the porch all add cuts. Ask for a measured sketch.

What comes out. Old concrete, a thick asphalt skin, or a garden wall costs time before the new base starts. "Lift and dispose" should be visible, not assumed.

The base. Depth after compaction, geotextile or not, and what happens if the formation is soft. The BGS viewer will not design the base, but it will stop anyone pretending every Hull street is the same soil. The urban geological report linked from the home page describes till, alluvium and tidal deposits under most of the city.

The surface specification. Block thickness, resin system and whether it is permeable, asphalt courses, gravel with or without a grid, concrete thickness and joints. The surface pages on this site are there so those words mean something before you read a quote.

Water. Where rain goes. A channel, a border, a soakaway that the ground can actually take, or a permeable build-up. This is both a performance question and, for many front gardens, a planning question. See the planning guide.

The highway. Hull City Council's process for a dropped kerb is a separate approval, often a separate contractor, and sometimes a planning application. The June 2025 pack describes turning space where permission is required. Leaving the kerb out of a quote makes the private garden look cheaper than the whole job. The dropped kerbs page follows the council's wording.

Access. A terrace with no side gate means materials come through the house or over the front. Say so in the quote form or the quote will assume a van can stop at the gate.

What not to compare

Do not compare a quote that includes VAT with one that hides it. Do not compare a price that stops at the boundary with one that includes the crossing. Do not treat a review score on another website as a specification. This site has no ratings to show you.

How the request works

You put the description in the quote form. It may be shared with professionals who choose to respond. They should visit or at least ask for photographs before they commit to a base depth. Hull Driveways does not sit in that conversation and does not mark up the quote.

Questions about driveway quotes in Hull

Can you tell me a budget before I open the form?

No. A budget from this website would be a made-up number. Describe the garden in the form and let people who can do the work reply.

Should I get more than one quote?

More than one professional may be offered the request. You can also decide that one careful quote is enough. The site does not set a quota.

What if the quotes disagree about the dig?

That disagreement is useful. Ask each of them why. The deeper dig is not automatically the honest one, and the shallow one is not automatically sharp practice. The soil and the levels decide it.
